In practice, Fowler's #51F machine was solid, but the team knew there was still more speed in the Chevrolet machine. Come time trials, Fowler had a lap that firmly put him in the field on his first qualifying lap, but when bad luck bit the team on the second lap, morale was still high for the 100-lap race.
“We had way too much stagger in the car in qualifying. We just overdid it a little bit, and we spun on the second lap. We got it worked out in the 10 minutes we could work on the car before the race and we were going to the front. I was just focused on putting qualifying behind me and ran it like any other race.”
Starting 22nd , Fowler immediately started a charge towards the front of the field. By mid-race, he was up in the top-10 before disaster nearly cost the #51F team a good finish.
“We made it on up through there, and we were running eighth when we got into a tough jam. Basically, we got spun out. That sort of bummed us out when we got flicked like that, but we didn't give up and brought her home.”
Rather than hang their heads, the entire Fowler team stayed pumped up, and the 15-year-old driver stayed on task to rally back towards the front before crossing beneath the checkered flag 10th.
“My car was real good, especially on short runs. The cautions during the race really helped me out because of that. I knew I had a good car because I was just picking them off as much as I could. I started 22nd, so to come all the way up into the top-10, not once, but twice during the race, was a pretty cool deal.”
