“Any time you can win, it's a great feeling,” said Williams. “To do it in front of the home crowd is always exciting. We started fourth and made the pass for the lead coming out of turn four on the first lap. Before we could complete the lap, the caution came out and we had a complete restart. I was able to do the exact same thing the second time. We took the lead and we never had another caution. We took the momentum we built at the Shootout and went out to Charlotte County and won the race by eight seconds, that's pretty cool.”
The Charlotte County victory came just a few days after posting an impressive point finish at the LMS Summer Shootout Series. Williams was tabbed by BDI Racing and its owner, SPEED television commentator Bob Dillner, to represent the team and supporter Buffalo Wild Wings at Afton Village in Concord, North Carolina in the 10-week Shootout earlier this season, and the young driver did not disappoint. Williams battled hard in the 2008 Summer Shootout by racing wheel-to-wheel with drivers far more experienced and seasoned in the battles of the competitive series. Undaunted, Williams raced his way to his best-ever Legends Car point finish at the Summer Shootout (12 th out of 41 Pro competitors).
“The Summer Shootout is unlike any kind of racing series out there,” admitted Williams. “If it was an all-year deal, we would be good from the beginning to the end. You just come here and the track is different every week and there's always so much beating and banging that you never know what you can expect. You just try to do what you can to hit that right setup. We learned a lot and I know that we'll come back next year and try it all again to be even better than we were this year.”
For the first time in the young racer's career, Williams sported a different number than his traditional #6 on the side of his Legends Car. Williams helped spread the word of the 40-cent wing Tuesdays at Buffalo Wild Wings, a sweet deal that the entire BDI Racing team and other racers from the Shootout enjoyed every Tuesday night after the final checkered flag had fallen at Lowe's.
“It was an honor being able to run the 40-cent Pro car this year for BDI Racing. It was a great opportunity that Bob and the whole BDI Racing team presented me this season and it was awesome going to Buffalo Wild Wings every Tuesday night, win, lose or draw, to have some awesome wings and share some laughs with good friends.”
Williams will continue his busy Summer of Legends Car racing in Florida and beyond in coming weeks.
